Christian Spiritual Formation

What is the Christian spiritual life or spiritual formation? How can we grow spiritually in the midst of increasing demands of family and work, the busyness of life and in the loud jarring noise of contemporary culture? Deep within us, many of us feel dissatisfaction with our spiritual life, longing to connect more intimately with God and achieve a balance in our personal life, church and workplace/home/school.

Christian spiritual formation in individuals is the work of forming and transforming by the Holy Spirit in the process of internalization of information and experiences in an individual to develop the character of Christ-likeness. The components are knowing and loving God, knowing and loving ourselves, knowing and loving our neighbours and being mindful of the presence of God in our daily routine living. This process is centered by the call of God the Father, the completed work on the cross of Jesus Christ our Saviour and empowered by the indwelling work of the Holy Spirit. Christian spiritual formation is Trinitarian in its theological emphasis. Christian spirituality is defined as living our daily life with God.

Biomedical Ethics

Advances in medical treatment modalities, biotechnological innovations, and genetic-molecular manipulations have brought about a set of unique challenging issues not faced by the Church before. A pastoral-theological approach is needed to examine, reflect and develop responses to these difficult moral and ethical issues such as test tube and designer babies, facts and fallacies of stem cell therapies, cloning, reproductive technologies, abortion, mercy-killing, allocation of scarce healthcare resources, living will, gene therapy, prenatal diagnosis, and aesthetic surgery.

Christians should be engaging personally with these issues and also help others to do so.  A rational engagement is essential to all Christians who are committed to living ethically in these changing times.
